Carrefour exits more countries: French retailer's new plans upset investors

## Carrefour's Strategic Shift

Carrefour, the French retail giant, is narrowing its focus to three primary markets: France, Spain, and Brazil. This decision comes as the company aims to enhance profitability and streamline operations. The move follows disappointing sales and profit figures in its home market, leading to a drop in its share price.

## Impact on Global Operations

Carrefour's strategy involves exiting or reducing presence in less profitable regions. Recently, it has withdrawn from several Middle Eastern countries, including Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait, where stores are being rebranded under a new name. Despite these changes, Carrefour maintains a strong presence in the UAE through a franchise model with Majid Al Futtaim.

## Expansion in Core Markets

In its key markets, Carrefour plans significant investments. In France, the company aims to open 1,000 new convenience stores by 2030, targeting a larger share of the grocery market. In Brazil, Carrefour will continue expanding its discount wholesale chain, Atacadão, focusing on small businesses and budget-conscious consumers.

## Future Prospects

Carrefour's decision to concentrate on fewer markets is part of a broader strategy to improve profitability. The company plans to cut costs and invest in technology to enhance efficiency and customer loyalty. While the focus is on core markets, Carrefour remains open to strategic options in other regions, including potential sales or exits.
