## Surge in Executions
Iran has significantly increased the number of executions, particularly targeting political prisoners, members of the People's Mujahedin (MEK), and protesters. This rise in capital punishment follows the onset of conflict with the United States and Israel, which began on February 28, 2026. Rights groups report that these executions are part of a strategy to instill fear and prevent further dissent.
## Secretive Trials and Sudden Executions
Families of those executed often learn about the death sentences through state media, as trials are conducted in secrecy. Vahid Baniamerian, a physics teacher, was among six men executed for alleged ties to the MEK. His family was unaware of his impending execution until it was reported by the media.
## Human Rights Concerns
Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights (IHR), express grave concerns over the increasing number of executions. They warn that hundreds of political prisoners and protesters face capital charges, with around 100 already sentenced to death. The breakdown of a ceasefire has heightened fears of further executions.
## International Response
IHR calls for international intervention, urging the European Union and other global entities to prioritize a moratorium on executions in their negotiations with Iran. Since the conflict began, 24 individuals have been executed for participating in protests, with additional executions linked to espionage and banned groups.
## Broader Context
While high-profile cases draw attention, the majority of executions in Iran are related to drug offenses and murder. Inmates at Ghezel Hesar prison have protested against the high rate of executions, particularly for drug-related charges, highlighting the harsh penalties for what they describe as minor offenses.
## Personal Stories
Baniamerian, remembered as a kind and responsible individual, tried to uplift fellow inmates even in his final days. He managed to send a message to his mother and encouraged others to remain strong, reflecting the human impact of Iran's execution policies.
