## Nun's Arrest Raises Concerns
Sister Leticia Ugboaja, a nun from McAllen, Texas, recently spoke about her arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on June 28. She was on her way to Sunday Mass when two armed officers approached her, causing her to feel confused and anxious.
## Legal Background
Ugboaja, originally from Nigeria, has been protected from deportation due to the risk of torture in her home country. Her attorney, Carlos M. Garcia, explained that although her asylum application was denied in 2019, she was granted protection from removal. Despite complying with all legal requirements, she was detained without much explanation.
## Third-Country Removal Policy
The Trump administration's policy of removing individuals to third countries has faced criticism and legal challenges. This policy aims to address immigration court backlogs by allowing asylum seekers to seek protection in other countries.
## Community and Legal Support
Ugboaja's case gained attention after parish officials highlighted it on social media, prompting intervention from Congress members. She expressed gratitude for the support but emphasized the need to speak out for others in similar situations.
## Personal Impact
As a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy and a registered nurse, Ugboaja was deeply affected by being unable to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion on the day of her arrest. She continues to advocate for the rights of those facing immigration challenges.
