## Canada Ready for U.S. Tariff Response
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada is prepared to respond if the U.S. imposes new tariffs on Canadian goods. These tariffs, proposed by President Donald Trump, could reach 50% and are set to take effect on August 19, 2026.
## Negotiations and Potential Impact
Carney emphasized ongoing negotiations with the U.S. to avoid the tariffs, which would affect a wide range of products including honey, liquor, and dairy. The tariffs would impact approximately $28 billion CAD in Canadian exports annually, representing about 5% of U.S. imports from Canada.
## Unified Canadian Response
The Canadian government and provincial leaders are presenting a united front. Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz highlighted the importance of a "Team Canada" approach. Ontario Premier Doug Ford stressed the need for a strong plan to protect the province's interests.
## Economic Diversification
Carney stated that Canada is committed to strengthening its economy and diversifying trade relationships beyond the U.S. He noted that regardless of the negotiation outcomes, Canada will support its families, workers, and businesses.
## Trust in U.S. Negotiations
Carney expressed caution about trusting any potential trade agreement with the U.S., emphasizing the need for assurance that any deal is reliable and beneficial for Canada.
