## Threatened Heritage Sites

The United Nations is preparing to classify several significant heritage sites as "in danger" due to threats from conflict and climate change. Among these are Biblical sites, Lebanese castles, and Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake.

## Upcoming UNESCO Votes

UNESCO's 196 member states will vote on new additions to the World Heritage and World Heritage in Danger lists during a meeting in Busan, South Korea. The aim is to draw global attention to these sites and secure funding for their preservation.

## Sites Facing Immediate Threats

Three sites are expected to be fast-tracked onto the endangered list. These include the archaeological site of Sebastia in the West Bank, five castles in southern Lebanon, and the Boma-Badingilo grasslands in South Sudan, which are threatened by both war and climate change.

## Additional Sites at Risk

Other sites already on the heritage list may also be labeled as endangered. This includes Roman ruins in Tyre, Lebanon, and the ancient Greek settlement of Tauric Chersonese in Crimea. Lake Baikal in Russia is also at risk due to pollution and ecological degradation.

## Potential New Listings

In addition to sites facing danger, UNESCO is considering new heritage listings. These include the Normandy beaches in France, two Amazonian theatres in Brazil, and the Tunisian village of Sidi Bou Said.
