## FAA Restores Boeing's Certification Authority
Boeing has been granted the ability to self-certify its 737 Max and 787 aircraft once more, following a comprehensive review by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This decision, effective next week, marks a significant milestone for Boeing after the setbacks caused by the 737 Max crashes and subsequent production issues.
## Background on FAA Oversight
Since 2019, the FAA had taken over the approval process for the 737 Max following two fatal crashes linked to a software flaw. In 2022, Boeing also lost its self-certification rights for the 787 Dreamliner due to production quality concerns. However, recent evaluations have shown that Boeing's safety checks align with those of the FAA, leading to the restoration of its certification authority.
## Continued Oversight and Safety Focus
Despite this change, FAA inspectors will maintain a presence at Boeing's facilities to ensure ongoing compliance and to identify potential defects early in the manufacturing process. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized that safety remains the top priority, and the decision reflects confidence in Boeing's ability to uphold safety standards.
## Production and Safety Improvements
Boeing has committed to continuing its collaboration with the FAA to enhance safety measures. Over the past year, the FAA has gradually increased the production limits on the 737 Max, following an incident in January 2024. The production rate has risen from 38 to 47 aircraft per month, indicating progress in addressing previous concerns.
