Southern Mexico hit by 7.3 earth quake, triggering tsunami alert

## Earthquake Details

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck southern Mexico on July 17, 2026. The epicenter was located 48 kilometers off the coast near the town of Aquiles Serdan, at a shallow depth of 18 kilometers, according to the US Geological Service.

## Affected Areas

The tremors were felt across the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, as well as in parts of Central America, including Guatemala and El Salvador. Despite the intensity of the quake, authorities have not reported any casualties.

## Tsunami Alert

Following the earthquake, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami alert for the Pacific coast. Residents in coastal areas were advised to move away from the beach as a precautionary measure.

## Local Response

In Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas, there was significant panic, particularly in taller buildings. However, Secretary of the Marines, Raymundo Morales, confirmed that there were no serious effects from the earthquake.
