## Australian Government's Response
Australia has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Laos' handling of the 2024 methanol poisoning incident in Vang Vieng, which resulted in the deaths of six tourists, including two Australians. The Australian government has summoned the Laos ambassador and sent an envoy to push for more severe charges.
## Incident Details
The tragedy occurred in November 2024, claiming the lives of two Australians, Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, along with tourists from Denmark, the US, and the UK. The deaths were linked to methanol-tainted alcohol, a toxic substance sometimes added to liquor to increase potency.
## Legal Proceedings
Laos plans to charge the operator of the Tiger alcohol brand with operating illegally, which could lead to a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a fine of approximately Aus$1,600. The operator denies responsibility.
## Reactions from Families
The families of the Australian victims have criticized the Laos authorities for not pursuing harsher charges, expressing deep disappointment and frustration.
## Broader Implications
Vang Vieng, once known for its party scene, has rebranded as an eco-tourism destination. However, Australian authorities continue to warn travelers about the risks associated with consuming local spirits, including cocktails. The Laos government has banned the sale of Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whisky due to health concerns.
