India launches first hydrogen-powered train in clean energy push

## India's Green Rail Initiative

India has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step in its efforts to decarbonize rail transport. This initiative places India among a select group of countries exploring hydrogen technology to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

## Train Specifications and Route

The new train, consisting of ten coaches, operates on an 89-kilometer route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. It is powered by a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system, which is touted as the most powerful of its kind globally.

## Environmental Impact

Hydrogen trains generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water and steam. This makes them a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered trains.

## Government Support and Development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the launch as a milestone for sustainable development in India. Although the train was developed domestically, some components, like the fuel cells, were imported.

## Infrastructure and Costs

The railway ministry has also inaugurated a large hydrogen storage and refueling facility in Jind, capable of holding 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen. The pilot project cost approximately $12 million, but officials expect costs to decrease as the technology advances.

## India's Rail Modernization

India's rail network, one of the largest in the world, has been undergoing significant upgrades. Recent investments have focused on infrastructure improvements, safety enhancements, and capacity expansion. The country has also introduced Vande Bharat trains and is constructing its first high-speed rail line using Japanese technology, with the first section expected to open in 2027.
