## Rising Ebola Cases and Deaths
The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a rapid increase in Ebola cases, with the total now exceeding 2,000. The outbreak, which began in May, has resulted in 754 deaths so far. This marks one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks on record.
## Health Worker Strikes
In response to unpaid salaries and bonuses, health workers at Bunia General Hospital and other treatment centers in Ituri province have gone on strike. These strikes are affecting the response to the outbreak, as healthcare workers demand compensation for their efforts under challenging conditions.
## Challenges in Containment
Efforts to contain the outbreak face significant hurdles. The World Health Organization reports that over 100 healthcare workers have been infected. Contact tracing remains difficult, with only 67% coverage of those exposed. Many new cases are emerging from unknown transmission chains, complicating efforts to control the spread.
## Additional Complications
The situation is further complicated by ongoing armed conflict and mining activities, which hinder the tracing of contacts. Many deaths occur in communities without access to healthcare facilities, exacerbating the crisis. The lack of approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus strain also poses a challenge, although trials for potential treatments have begun in Ituri.
