## A Controversial Beginning
The intense football rivalry between England and Argentina can be traced back to a controversial match during the 1966 World Cup. This quarter-final clash, held in England, is often referred to by Argentinians as "El Robo" or "The Robbery."
## The Incident
The match's turning point came when Argentine captain Antonio Rattin was sent off by referee Rudolf Kreitlein. The decision was contentious because Kreitlein, a West German, did not speak Spanish, and Rattin did not understand German or English. Despite the language barrier, Kreitlein claimed Rattin's demeanor justified the dismissal.
## Aftermath and Legacy
Rattin's refusal to leave the field without an interpreter led to a significant delay. He eventually exited, sitting defiantly on the red carpet, while spectators threw objects at him. This incident highlighted communication issues in football and inspired the introduction of yellow and red cards in the 1970 World Cup.
## Lasting Impact
England won the match 1-0 and went on to claim their only World Cup title. However, the controversy left Argentina feeling wronged, marking the beginning of a fierce rivalry that has endured for decades.
