Syria's People's Assembly convened its first session on Sunday, marking a significant shift in the country's political landscape. Unlike previous sessions under Bashar Al Assad, the gathering was notably subdued, with no standing ovations or cheers as President Ahmad Al Sharaa addressed the lawmakers.

## Transition to Strengthened Institutions

During the session, Abdul Hamid Al Awak was elected as the Speaker of Parliament. Al Awak, who led the drafting of Syria's constitutional declaration, will guide the assembly's legislative duties. The parliament, consisting of 210 members, is tasked with approving laws and eventually establishing a permanent constitution and electoral law by 2028.

## Challenges and Future Goals
