## Annual Kite Festival in Burin
In the West Bank village of Burin, an annual kite festival serves as a poignant symbol of hope and resilience for Palestinians. The event, which began in 2009, takes place on land that residents claim has been partially taken over by Israeli settlers.
## A Message of Defiance
The festival is not just a children's event but also carries a political message. Organizers, like Ghassan Najjar, emphasize that the kites represent a claim to the land and sky, even as physical access is restricted.
## Tensions with Settlers
Burin is surrounded by Israeli settlements, including Har Bracha, established in 1983. These settlements are considered illegal under international law. The area has seen increased violence, with reports of attacks on residents and property.
## A Day of Celebration
Despite the tensions, the festival offers a brief respite. Families gather, children have their faces painted, and kites in Palestinian and Egyptian colors fill the sky. However, the threat of settler violence looms, as residents remain cautious.
## Determination to Continue
The festival concludes as the wind dies down, but the community's resolve remains strong. Residents like Qusai Walid Eid attend each year to reinforce their connection to the land, vowing to return next summer.
