## Tragic Incident in Kannur

An 18-month-old boy named Devansh Shouria passed away after receiving anaesthesia for a minor lip injury at a private hospital in Kannur, Kerala. The incident occurred following a fall at his home on July 5, which resulted in a cut on his lip. His parents, T Suraj and Vijisha, took him to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur for treatment.

## Medical Complications

After anaesthesia was administered to stitch the wound, Devansh's condition deteriorated, leading to a cardiac arrest. Despite being placed on ventilator support and transferred to the hospital's Kannur unit for advanced care, he remained in critical condition and died on July 10.

## Legal Action and Hospital Response

Following a complaint by a relative, Payyannur police have charged Dr. Anjali Poduval, the anaesthetist involved, under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to acts endangering life or safety. The hospital has denied any negligence, stating that all protocols were followed and that complications can arise despite proper care.

## Public Reaction

The incident has sparked public outrage, with members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India staging a protest at the hospital, demanding accountability for the toddler's death.
