## Ethanol-Blended Fuel Under Scrutiny
India is addressing public concerns regarding its E20 ethanol-blended petrol, which has faced criticism on social media for allegedly damaging vehicle engines. The government has been promoting biofuels to reduce oil imports and emissions, and the ethanol-blending initiative is part of this strategy.
## Government's Response
The oil ministry acknowledged that E20 could slightly reduce fuel economy by 3-5%, but dismissed claims of engine damage, citing a lack of scientific evidence. The transition to E20 has been gradual and involved consultations with automakers.
## Industry Feedback
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, reported no issues related to E20 in the 28.4 million vehicles serviced in the 2025-2026 fiscal year. Toyota India attributed a viral complaint about one of its vehicles to fuel contamination, not E20 usage.
## Public Debate and Challenges
Despite reassurances, the controversy has sparked debates and protests, with critics urging the government to offer more fuel options. However, the oil ministry stated that maintaining multiple fuel grades would be logistically challenging and costly across India's extensive distribution network.
