## Emergency Evacuations in Midtown
On July 7, 2026, a high-rise building in Manhattan, undergoing conversion into luxury apartments, faced structural issues when columns buckled, prompting emergency evacuations. The incident occurred during the morning rush hour, affecting nearby buildings, including a school and diplomatic offices.
## Stabilization Efforts
By late Tuesday, the building was deemed stable, allowing some evacuated residents to return. New York City Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani confirmed no further movement in the structure, enabling contractors to proceed with emergency repairs.
## Structural Concerns
The building, formerly Pfizer's headquarters, is located near Grand Central Station. The buckling of columns raised fears of a potential collapse, though Fire Chief John Esposito noted it would likely be localized rather than total.
## Ongoing Repairs
Construction workers began reinforcing the damaged areas, with experts suggesting that the buckled columns may need replacement. The project, led by Gensler and MetroLoft, involves significant modifications, including adding stories to the 1970s-era structure.
## Developer's Response
MetroLoft's Nathan Berman indicated that the additional weight from the building's expansion might have caused the damage. He assured that the building's overall integrity remains intact, with 95% of the structure sound.
