## Remembering Prof KK Abdul Gaffar
Prof KK Abdul Gaffar, a prominent figure in the field of education in both India and the UAE, passed away at his home in Mangalore, Karnataka, on July 5 at the age of 88. Known for his significant contributions to engineering and medical education, his passing has prompted heartfelt tributes from former students, colleagues, and community leaders.
## A Legacy of Discipline and Integrity
Former students fondly recall Prof Abdul Gaffar as a strict yet caring mentor. Muhammad Asharaf, a former student and now CEO in Abu Dhabi, remembers him as a disciplinarian who was affectionately nicknamed "Hitler" by students. Despite his stern demeanor, he was deeply respected for instilling discipline and accountability.
## A Caring Mentor
Tanveer Kasarkode, another former student, shared memories of the professor's supportive nature. Known as "Princi," Prof Abdul Gaffar was a figure who balanced strictness with compassion, encouraging students to overcome academic challenges.
## Contributions to Education
Dr Thumbay Moideen, founder of Thumbay Group, highlighted Prof Abdul Gaffar's role in establishing Gulf Medical College, now Gulf Medical University in Ajman. His dedication and vision were instrumental in the institution's early development.
## A Life of Principles
Prof Abdul Gaffar's son, Dr Shajir Gaffar, shared insights into his father's unwavering principles. Known for his integrity, Prof Abdul Gaffar was involved in the historic P Rajan case, a landmark human rights case in Kerala.
## Autobiography and Legacy
In January 2023, Prof Abdul Gaffar's autobiography, "Njan Sakshi," was released by former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The book details his experiences and contributions to education and human rights.
Prof Abdul Gaffar is survived by his wife, Jameela Schamnad, and four children. He was laid to rest in Kasaragod after Janaza prayers.
