## Controversial Match Decisions
Egypt's national football team has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA following their 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) is challenging several refereeing decisions that they believe unfairly influenced the outcome of the match.
## Key Incidents
Egypt led 2-0 until the 79th minute before Argentina mounted a comeback. A critical moment occurred when Mostafa Zico's goal was disallowed after a VAR review, citing a foul on Lisandro Martinez. Additionally, Egypt's appeals for a penalty after Julian Alvarez's challenge on Mo Salah were dismissed. Another contentious point was the lack of a VAR review for a supposed foul on Hamdi Fathy before Enzo Fernandez's decisive goal.
## Official Complaint
EFA President Hany Abo Rida has requested a thorough investigation into the officiating team, including referee Francois Letexier and the VAR officials. The complaint highlights inconsistencies in the application of VAR, particularly in comparison to the decisions that favored Argentina.
## FIFA's Response
As of now, FIFA has not publicly addressed Egypt's complaint or indicated any plans to investigate the match officials. This adds to ongoing concerns about refereeing standards at the tournament.
## Historical Context
While such complaints are not common, they are not without precedent. Similar grievances have been raised in past World Cups, including by Italy in 2002 and Algeria earlier in this tournament. However, FIFA rarely overturns match results or removes officials based solely on these complaints.
