## Minister's Announcement at WIPO

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE's Minister of Economy and Tourism, announced the country's accession during the 68th Assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. He emphasized that this step is crucial for enhancing the protection of industrial designs and fostering innovation.

## Vision for Innovation and Economic Growth

The UAE's participation in the Locarno Agreement is part of a broader vision to create a supportive environment for innovators and inventors. This aligns with the "We the UAE 2031" vision, aiming to position the country as a global hub for a knowledge-based economy.

## Legislative and Technological Advancements

The UAE has developed comprehensive IP legislation, covering industrial property rights, trademarks, and copyrights. These efforts have supported start-ups and the creative industries, contributing to economic diversification and growth.

## Initiatives and Achievements

Over the past three years, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism has launched over 60 initiatives to enhance the IP ecosystem. Notable among these is the Trademark Marketplace, a pioneering digital platform for trading trademarks in the region.

## Growth in IP Filings

The UAE has seen a rise in trademark and patent filings, reflecting the success of its legislative and strategic initiatives. In the first half of 2026, 17,217 trademarks were registered, and patent applications increased by 12% compared to the previous year.

## Combating Digital Piracy

Efforts to protect broadcasting rights and combat digital piracy have intensified, with the ministry blocking over 31,000 infringing websites in 2026. This represents a 26% increase in blocked sites compared to the same period in 2025.
