## Introduction to the 'X' Gesture
FIFA has introduced a new anti-racism measure for the 2026 World Cup, known as the 'X' gesture. This initiative allows players to signal racist abuse by crossing their arms at the wrists, forming an 'X'. This gesture can lead to the suspension or abandonment of a match.
## Implementation and Protocol
The 'X' gesture is part of FIFA's "Global Stand Against Racism" campaign, which was approved by all 211 member associations in 2024. The protocol involves a three-step process:
1. **Stop the Game**: Upon seeing the gesture, referees can halt the match. Announcements are made to inform the audience and warn against further abuse.
2. **Suspend the Match**: If abuse continues, the match can be suspended, with players returning to the dressing rooms. Further announcements outline potential consequences.
3. **Abandonment**: As a last resort, the match can be abandoned if the situation does not improve, following consultation with officials.
## Broader Anti-Racism Efforts
FIFA's anti-racism framework includes stricter rules and sanctions, efforts to prosecute racist behavior, educational initiatives, and a Players’ Voice Panel to monitor progress. This comprehensive approach aims to protect players and promote a zero-tolerance stance on racism in football.
