Rule of law key to prosperous new Syria: Macron

## Diplomatic and Economic Ties Restored

French President Emmanuel Macron and Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa have agreed to re-establish full diplomatic relations and enhance economic cooperation. This decision comes during Macron's visit to Syria, marking the first by a Western leader since the fall of Bashar Al Assad in 2024. Despite recent explosions in Damascus that injured 18 people, Macron emphasized the importance of not letting violence hinder Syria's transition.

## Focus on Rule of Law

Macron stressed the necessity of replacing dictatorship with a genuine rule of law to ensure Syria's prosperity. He highlighted this at a joint press conference with Sharaa, asserting that only through the rule of law can Syria achieve a prosperous future.

## Economic Vision for Syria

The leaders unveiled plans to position Syria as a regional trade hub, particularly in light of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Sharaa expressed a desire for France to become Syria's primary economic partner, encouraging French companies to invest in Syria's reconstruction. Several agreements were signed, including a 30-year contract with CMA CGM and an oil and gas exploration deal involving TotalEnergies.

## Security Concerns

During Macron's visit, two explosive devices detonated in central Damascus, injuring 18 people. The blasts occurred near the hotel where Macron had stayed, but he continued his visit as planned. Syrian authorities reported that the devices exploded while bomb disposal teams were preparing to dismantle them.
