Iran warns Britain, France against Hormuz mine-clearing mission as Europe moves to help free world's most critical oil chokepoint

## Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has issued a warning to Britain and France regarding their plans to lead a naval mission to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway is crucial for global oil and gas shipments. The operation aims to restore safe commercial navigation following a recent ceasefire between the US and Iran.

## European Security Plans

The British-French initiative involves a multinational task force to remove an estimated 80 naval mines laid during recent conflicts. The mission will also escort commercial vessels and reassure insurers and shipowners about the safety of the strait. The operation is expected to involve specialist mine-countermeasure vessels and unmanned underwater systems.

## Iran's Response

Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, emphasized Iran's role as the guarantor of the strait's security and warned against foreign military deployments. The warning highlights ongoing tensions despite the ceasefire, which allowed oil exports to resume but left the waterway operating below normal capacity.

## International Involvement

While NATO is not formally involved, many of its members, including Germany, Belgium, and Canada, are expected to contribute to the mission. This comes as European leaders face pressure from the US to take more responsibility for securing the strait.

## Oman's Diplomatic Role

Oman, which borders the strait, has played a key diplomatic role in the crisis. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq has proposed a compromise framework for maritime safety, modeled on the Strait of Malacca, to ensure unimpeded transit through international straits.
