## Saudi Oil Exports Rebound
Saudi Arabia has significantly increased its crude oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, with an estimated 34 million barrels shipped since a ceasefire began on June 17. This marks a strong recovery in oil flows from the Gulf region, despite ongoing disruptions in commercial shipping through this critical maritime passage.
## Shipping Disruptions Persist
According to data from the IMF PortWatch platform, commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains low, with only about 27 ships transiting daily, compared to a pre-conflict average of 84. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by private shipowners, who are cautious due to security risks and high insurance costs.
## State-Backed Tankers Lead the Way
Much of the crude oil is being transported by state-backed tankers, which benefit from sovereign insurance programs. Some vessels are also using security measures like disabling AIS transmissions to navigate safely. In contrast, many independent operators avoid the route due to elevated war-risk insurance premiums.
## Regional Oil Export Dynamics
The recovery in oil exports has been particularly beneficial for major Gulf producers. Saudi Arabia has steadily increased its shipments, while the United Arab Emirates has also ramped up production and exports, especially to Asian markets, following its exit from OPEC.
## Strategic Importance of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital oil transit route, carrying about 20% of global petroleum consumption. Although the ceasefire has reduced fears of a prolonged supply disruption, experts suggest that full recovery in shipping activity will take time, as confidence in the safety of the waterway needs to be restored.
