## Introduction of Account-Based Ticketing
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is nearing completion of a significant upgrade to the Nol card system, marking its most substantial transformation since the metro's inception in 2009. The new account-based ticketing platform will allow commuters to pay using QR codes, digital wallets, and bank cards, aiming for a cashless public transport network by early 2027.
## Phased Implementation
The upgrade is being rolled out in three phases. Initially, QR-code ticketing will be introduced, enabling electronic ticket purchases and validations. The second phase will see the launch of advanced Nol cards linked to customer accounts, compatible with banking systems. The final phase will allow direct payments using bank cards and digital wallets, reducing the need for physical transit cards.
## Enhanced User Experience
The new system will offer features such as personal account creation, multiple card management, and automatic top-ups linked to bank accounts. This will provide users with greater flexibility and security, as well as more adaptable fare structures across various transport modes.
## Beyond Public Transport
The revamped Nol cards will extend their functionality beyond commuting, allowing users to make purchases at retail outlets across the UAE. This expansion supports Dubai's vision of becoming a leader in smart mobility and the digital economy.
## Supporting Infrastructure
To facilitate this transition, RTA is upgrading ticketing systems, payment devices, and smart kiosks throughout the public transport network. These enhancements aim to position Nol as a comprehensive digital payment platform, aligning with Dubai's Cashless Strategy.
