Ask Gulf News: Can a 15-year-old legally work in the UAE

## Legal Framework for Teen Employment

In the UAE, teenagers aged 15 to 18 can work legally, but there are specific regulations in place. The UAE Labour Law prohibits employment of children under 15, and work permits for those aged 15 to 18 are issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under strict conditions.

## Conditions for Employment

To employ a minor, several requirements must be met. Firstly, written consent from the child's guardian is necessary. Additionally, a medical certificate confirming the child's fitness for work is required. Working hours are limited to six hours per day, including breaks totaling at least one hour. Minors cannot work more than four consecutive hours and are not allowed to work between 7 pm and 7 am.

## Restrictions on Work Type

The law also restricts minors from engaging in hazardous or physically demanding jobs. They are not permitted to work overtime, on weekends, or during official holidays. These measures are designed to protect the health, safety, and morals of young workers.
