Kuwait plans freelance visa to curb residency trade and reform labour market

## New Visa Initiative

Kuwait is planning to introduce a freelance visa aimed at reforming its labor market and reducing the trade in residency permits. This initiative was announced by Sheikh Fahd Al Yousef, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, during a meeting with private sector representatives.

## Independent Work for Expatriates

The proposed visa will allow expatriates to work independently without needing a traditional sponsor. This move is part of a broader effort to address issues related to unregulated labor, residency brokerage, and inflated wages in low-skilled jobs.

## Addressing Labor Market Challenges

The current system has been criticized for weak oversight, leading to inconsistent service standards and limited accountability. The new freelance visa is expected to enhance transparency, protect workers from exploitation, and improve service quality.

## Implementation Details

In its initial phase, the scheme will focus on simple professions. Annual fees for the visa are anticipated to be between KD750 and KD1,000. Applicants must register a verified residential address, provide an approved email, and submit personal data, among other requirements.
