## A Bid for Global Recognition

The United Arab Emirates is intensifying efforts to have Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This mountain reserve, located about 45 kilometers from Fujairah City, is celebrated for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance.

## Biodiversity Hotspot

Spanning 220 square kilometers, Wadi Wurayah is home to over 1,099 species, including 216 plant species, 114 bird species, 20 mammal species, and 30 reptile and amphibian species. Notable inhabitants include the Arabian tahr, Blanford’s fox, and the caracal. The reserve's unique ecosystem is further enriched by its perennial springs and waterfalls.

## Scientific and Cultural Importance

The area serves as a vital center for scientific research, leading to the rediscovery of rare species. It also holds cultural significance, being near Al Bidyah Mosque, the oldest mosque in the UAE.

## UNESCO Nomination

The UAE has nominated Wadi Wurayah based on UNESCO’s Criterion (ix), which focuses on ecological and biological processes. The nomination highlights the reserve's ancient geological formations and well-preserved habitats.

## International Recognitions

Wadi Wurayah has received several international accolades, including being declared a protected nature reserve in 2009 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2018. The Fujairah Environment Authority will present the nomination at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in South Korea this July.
