## Introduction to Al Burda Award 2026

The UAE Ministry of Culture has announced the key features of the 20th edition of the Al Burda Award, a prestigious event celebrating Islamic arts. The announcement was made during a media briefing in Abu Dhabi, attended by cultural leaders and media representatives.

## Evolution and Significance

Since its inception in 2004, the Al Burda Award has grown into a significant cultural platform under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The award has honored over 420 artists worldwide, showcasing the UAE's commitment to Islamic cultural heritage.

## New Developments and Categories

The 2026 edition introduces transformative updates to award categories and artistic criteria. It includes three main categories: Arabic poetry, Arabic calligraphy, and ornamentation, each with multiple subcategories. A notable change is the combination of Rayhani and Jali Muhaqqaq calligraphy styles, inspired by Mamluk art.

## Theme and International Collaboration

The theme for this edition is "Family: Tranquillity and Compassion," aligning with the UAE's "Year of the Family." Indonesia is named the 'Guest of Honour,' recognizing its rich Islamic arts heritage. A new initiative, the 'Al Burda Grant,' will foster collaboration between UAE and Indonesian artists.

## Registration and Submission

Registrations are open until August 22, 2026, with submissions for calligraphy and ornamentation accepted from August 23 to September 7, 2026. The process has been enhanced for greater accessibility, encouraging broader participation.
