## Economic and Health Benefits
A recent report from the UAE, developed with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, highlights the potential economic and health benefits of addressing obesity. The report suggests that effective obesity interventions could contribute $51 billion to the UAE's GDP by 2031 and save $1.5 billion in healthcare costs.
## Impact on Population and Workforce
The report, titled 'Beneath the Surface: The Hidden Socioeconomic Impacts of Weight Loss,' indicates that over 1.2 million adults could overcome obesity with these interventions. This could lead to a 15 percentage point reduction in obesity prevalence and an increase in GDP growth by 1.5 percentage points above current projections.
## Broader Societal Benefits
Beyond economic gains, the report projects significant societal benefits. These include an increase in worker productivity, with individuals gaining up to five additional working days per year. Additionally, annual individual income could rise by up to $772.
## Demographic and Educational Impacts
The report also forecasts demographic changes, with an estimated 75,000 additional births by 2031, including 24,000 Emirati births. Furthermore, more than 17,000 individuals could join the workforce, including over 9,000 Emirati women. Educational impacts include over 2,000 additional bachelor's degree enrollments and a 1.4% reduction in university dropout rates.
## Strategic Importance
The findings underscore the importance of integrating health into national development strategies, emphasizing the role of public health in economic resilience and competitiveness. The UAE's commitment to health as a national priority is seen as a key factor in supporting quality of life and innovation.
