## Introduction to Al Burda Award 2026
The UAE Ministry of Culture has announced the key features of the 20th Al Burda Award, a prestigious event celebrating Islamic arts. The announcement was made during a media briefing in Abu Dhabi, attended by cultural leaders and media representatives.
## Historical Context and Growth
Since its inception in 2004, under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the award has become a significant cultural platform. It has honored over 420 artists globally, showcasing poetry, calligraphy, and ornamentation as core elements of Islamic arts.
## New Features and Categories
The 2026 edition introduces updates to award categories and artistic criteria, encouraging creative exploration while maintaining Islamic art authenticity. The main categories include Arabic poetry, calligraphy, and ornamentation, with subcategories like classical and contemporary styles.
## Innovations in Calligraphy
A notable change is the combination of Rayhani and Jali Muhaqqaq calligraphy styles, inspired by Mamluk-period art. This aims to inspire artists to creatively engage with Islamic heritage.
## Theme and Guest of Honour
The theme "Family: Tranquillity and Compassion" aligns with the UAE's "Year of the Family," emphasizing the family's role in national identity. Indonesia is the "Guest of Honour," recognized for its rich Islamic arts tradition.
## Al Burda Grant Program
A new initiative, the Al Burda Grant, will be launched in collaboration with Nasheed artist Mustafa Atef. This program aims to produce joint works between the UAE and Indonesia, highlighting shared cultural stories.
## Registration and Submission Details
The registration for the award is open until August 22, 2026, with submissions for calligraphy and ornamentation accepted from August 23 to September 7, 2026. The process has been enhanced for greater accessibility and participation.
