## The Changing Landscape of Study Abroad
University rankings have traditionally been a significant factor in choosing where to study abroad. However, experts at a recent Edufair in Abu Dhabi emphasized that students should also consider how well a university aligns with their career aspirations and offers post-study opportunities.
## Importance of Career Alignment
Namrata Walia from GuideMe Education highlighted that while rankings are important, they should not be the sole criterion. She pointed out that a top-ranked university might not always provide the best return on investment (ROI). Instead, students should assess whether the institution supports their long-term career goals.
Ritu Kalwani from Score Plus Education echoed this sentiment, advising students to prioritize program fit and career direction over prestige. She emphasized the importance of internships and co-op programs in enhancing employability after graduation.
## Beyond Financial ROI
The panelists noted that ROI in education extends beyond potential salaries. Families are increasingly considering factors like internships, industry exposure, and migration pathways. Walia stressed that investment in education includes not just tuition but also visa and living costs.
## Visa and Work Opportunities
Visa regulations and post-study work opportunities are now crucial in choosing study destinations. Walia mentioned that the ability to stay and work in a country post-graduation significantly impacts ROI. Countries like Canada and the US attract students due to their co-op structures and internship opportunities.
## Preparing for a Global Career
Zawahir Siddique from Westford highlighted the growing focus on global employability. Students are increasingly interested in programs that prepare them for international careers, not just degrees. He shared an example of a student choosing a lower-ranked university in Spain for its internship opportunities, which provided a pathway to employment and residency.
