## Community-Led Initiative
The Dawoodi Bohra community in the UAE is spearheading a zero-waste initiative during Ramadan iftars. Managed by the Dana Committee, this program emphasizes the importance of not wasting food, aligning with Quranic teachings. The community's approach involves careful planning and portion control to ensure that no food goes to waste.
## Data-Driven Approach
The shift to a data-driven model has been crucial in minimizing food waste. Attendance is confirmed through RSVP systems, and historical data is analyzed to provide accurate headcounts. This allows caterers to prepare precise quantities, reducing surplus. Volunteers monitor food consumption trends, adjusting portions as needed to further minimize waste.
## Global and Local Impact
Operating in over 400 locations worldwide, the Dana Committee's efforts are supported by more than 6,000 volunteers. In the UAE, the initiative aligns with national sustainability goals, including food security strategies. Surplus food is redistributed through approved channels, such as the UAE Food Bank, while organic waste is composted where possible.
## Cultural Shift
The initiative has fostered a cultural shift within the community, making waste reduction a year-round practice. Families, youth, and elders all play a role in reinforcing the message of responsible consumption. This peer-driven model has proven effective and sustainable, contributing to the UAE's broader sustainability objectives.
