Ramadan overtime rules in UAE: How employees can claim unpaid compensation

## Reduced Working Hours During Ramadan

In the UAE, private sector employees experience a reduction in their daily working hours by two hours during the holy month of Ramadan. This adjustment is not optional but a legal requirement.

## Overtime Compensation

If employees work beyond the reduced hours, they are entitled to overtime pay. For daytime overtime, the compensation includes the regular hourly wage plus an additional 25%. For work between 10 PM and 4 AM, the bonus increases to 50%, unless the employee is already on a night shift contract.

## Working on Off-Days

Employees required to work on their scheduled day off can either receive a substitute rest day or a cash payment, which includes their regular hourly wage plus a 50% bonus.

## Claiming Unpaid Overtime

If employers fail to compensate for overtime, employees can file a complaint. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) can investigate and potentially refer the case to a labor court. MOHRE can issue binding decisions for claims up to Dh50,000.

## Filing a Complaint

To file a complaint, employees should gather evidence such as employment contracts, timesheets, and communications regarding overtime. Complaints can be submitted through the MOHRE app or website under the 'My Salary Complaint' service, specifying 'Non-payment of overtime wages.'
