Cheaper, cleaner hydrogen: Scientists unlock way to make it — study

## Breakthrough in Hydrogen Fuel Technology

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have made significant progress in producing clean hydrogen fuel more affordably. This development could enhance the efficiency and scalability of renewable hydrogen energy.

## New Catalyst Innovation

The team, led by Professor Gang Wu, has created a durable catalyst that eliminates the need for expensive platinum metals. This catalyst is designed for use in anion-exchange membrane water electrolysers (AEMWE), which split water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.

## Composition and Performance

The innovative catalyst combines rhenium phosphide and molybdenum phosphide, improving the hydrogen extraction process. The system, paired with a nickel-iron anode, outperformed existing platinum-based systems and demonstrated durability by operating over 1,000 hours at high current densities.

## Future Prospects

While the current experiments are at a laboratory scale, the researchers aim to explore the potential for industrial application, which could revolutionize hydrogen fuel production and storage.
