Canadian cruise passenger confirmed positive for hantavirus

## Hantavirus Case on MV Hondius

A Canadian passenger aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has been diagnosed with the Andes hantavirus, according to public health officials. The ship departed from Argentina on April 1, 2026, and was traveling across the Atlantic when the outbreak occurred.

## Health Agency Statement

The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed the positive test result on May 16. The individual was among four Canadians on the ship. A second Canadian, who was traveling with the infected person, tested negative for the virus.

## Risk Assessment

The agency has stated that the risk to the general Canadian population remains low. The Andes strain of hantavirus is unique in its ability to spread between humans, but no additional cases have been reported in Canada.

## Global Impact

The global death toll from this hantavirus outbreak stands at three. Currently, there are no vaccines or specific treatments available for hantavirus, but health officials emphasize that it should not be compared to the Covid-19 pandemic.
