Mob torches 100 homes in Sindh over free-will marriage

## Violent Outbreak in Sindh

A violent mob attack in Pakistan's Sindh province led to over 100 homes being set on fire. The incident occurred in Jacobabad district following a marriage between Sidra from the Channa community and Muhammad Hassan Buriro, which was conducted in court on May 4.

## Community Tensions

The marriage, which was a free-will union, sparked outrage among the communities involved. Armed individuals reportedly attacked the Buriro community's village, causing residents to flee as their homes were engulfed in flames. The attack left many families homeless, with their possessions destroyed.

## Legal and Social Implications

The groom’s father, Malhar Buriro, expressed disbelief over the collective punishment of their community. Police have registered a case against 32 suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Act, with five arrests made so far. Raids continue to apprehend others involved.

## Allegations and Investigations

The situation has been further complicated by allegations from the bride’s family, claiming she was underage and abducted. The girl's father stated that his 14-year-old daughter was married illegally, violating the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, and that both she and her younger sister were taken.

## Government Response

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah condemned the attack, calling it "inhuman and intolerable." He has ordered immediate relief for affected families and a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The incident highlights ongoing issues of tribal violence and honor-related disputes in rural Pakistan.
