## Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an international health emergency due to a deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak has resulted in over 80 deaths and 336 suspected cases, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
## Bundibugyo Strain
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment. This strain, first identified in 2007, has a lethality rate that can reach up to 50%. The outbreak has also spread to neighboring Uganda, where a Congolese national has died.
## Response and Challenges
Doctors Without Borders is preparing a large-scale response, highlighting the rapid spread of the virus as extremely concerning. The outbreak has been confirmed in Ituri province, which borders Uganda and South Sudan. The lack of infrastructure in the DRC complicates the transport of medical supplies and personnel.
## High Risk of Spread
This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC, and officials warn of a high risk of further spread. The WHO has noted significant uncertainties regarding the true number of cases and their geographic distribution. The high positivity rate of initial samples and confirmed cases in two countries suggest a potentially larger outbreak than currently reported.
## Historical Context
Ebola, believed to originate from bats, causes severe symptoms such as bleeding and organ failure. It spreads through bodily fluids of symptomatic individuals. Previous outbreaks have shown mortality rates between 25% and 90%. The deadliest outbreak in the DRC occurred between 2018 and 2020, resulting in nearly 2,300 deaths.
