## Concerns Over Heat Risks
A group of scientists has raised alarms about the heat safety measures planned for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing they are insufficient to protect players. The tournament, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to face extreme heat conditions.
## Current Measures and Criticism
FIFA's existing protocols include three-minute cooling breaks, climate-controlled benches, and monitoring heat stress using Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings. However, experts claim these measures do not align with the latest scientific research and are inadequate.
## Recommendations for Improvement
The scientists, from various countries including the UK and USA, recommend more stringent actions. They suggest delaying matches if WBGT levels exceed 28°C, extending cooling breaks to six minutes, and enhancing cooling facilities. They also urge FIFA to update guidelines regularly and consider recommendations from the global players' union, FIFPRO.
## Lessons from Qatar
The previous World Cup in Qatar faced similar heat concerns, leading to a schedule shift to winter months and the implementation of advanced cooling technologies. These measures were successful in preventing heat-related incidents, setting a precedent for managing extreme climate conditions in major tournaments.
