## Forum Penalized for Harmful Content
The UK has fined a US-based online forum £950,000 for hosting content that allegedly contributed to 130 deaths in the country. The fine was issued by Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, under the Online Safety Act.
## Investigation and Findings
An investigation launched in April 2025 revealed that the forum contained guides and threads detailing various suicide methods. Some of these posts were reportedly pinned or reposted by the forum's provider, indicating awareness of the content.
## Regulatory Action
Ofcom has mandated the platform to block access to such content for UK users within ten working days or face a potential ban in the UK. The forum initially claimed exemption from UK laws due to its US location, but Ofcom enforced compliance with the Online Safety Act, which prohibits encouraging or assisting suicide.
## Reaction from Advocacy Groups
The Molly Rose Foundation, a charity focused on suicide prevention, supported the regulatory action but criticized the delay, noting it took 13 months to address the issue. The foundation estimates that 130 UK deaths are linked to the forum's advice.
