## Passenger Numbers Decline
London's Heathrow Airport experienced a 5.3% decrease in passenger traffic in April, with numbers falling to approximately 6.7 million from 7.1 million the previous year. This decline is attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted travel plans and led to changes in global flight routes.
## Impact on Middle East Routes
Traffic from the Middle East to Heathrow dropped by over 50% as travelers avoided areas affected by the conflict and airspace disruptions. This situation has impacted major aviation hubs beyond the Middle East, including those in Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, which typically serve as key transit points between Europe, Asia, and Australia.
## Increase in Transfer Passengers
Despite the overall decline, Heathrow reported a 10% increase in transfer passengers in April. Many travelers rerouted their journeys through London, using it as a connecting hub to destinations in Asia and Oceania. This shift indicates that while direct travel from the Middle East has decreased, Heathrow is absorbing some of the displaced demand.
## Stable Overall Demand
Heathrow's chief executive, Thomas Woldbye, noted that despite short-term disruptions, overall demand for travel remains strong. The airport plans to review its passenger forecast for 2026 in June, as the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve and affect global travel patterns.
