## Cruise Ship Evacuation
A hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has led to a complex evacuation process from Spain's Canary Islands. Passengers from various countries, including the US and France, have tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is known for its rare human-to-human transmission.
## WHO Recommendations
The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised a 42-day monitoring period for all passengers and crew. However, different countries are implementing varied quarantine protocols. For instance, Greece mandates a 45-day hospital quarantine for one evacuee, while the UK and US have opted for initial quarantine followed by further monitoring.
## Global Response
The outbreak has resulted in three fatalities and several infections. Health officials emphasize that the public risk remains low, but the unique nature of the Andes virus has heightened global concern. Efforts are underway to trace passengers who disembarked before the outbreak was confirmed.
## Misinformation and Public Concern
The situation has sparked misinformation reminiscent of the Covid-19 pandemic, with false claims circulating online. WHO officials are working to reassure the public, emphasizing that this is not another Covid crisis. The focus now shifts to monitoring and preventing further spread as the ship heads to Rotterdam for disinfection.
