Indonesia rescuers search for hikers killed in volcanic eruption

## Search Resumes for Missing Hikers

Indonesian rescue teams have resumed their search for three hikers who perished during a volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono in North Halmahera. The eruption, which occurred on Friday, sent ash plumes 10 kilometers into the sky. The victims include two Singaporeans and one Indonesian, though they are still officially listed as missing.

## Ongoing Rescue Operations

The search was temporarily halted on Friday due to ongoing volcanic activity but resumed on Saturday with over 100 personnel, including police and soldiers, utilizing drones to assist in the operation. Despite the dangers, rescuers are determined to locate the bodies, which are believed to be near the crater.

## Volcanic Activity and Safety Measures

Mount Dukono, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, has been on a heightened alert since 2008. An exclusion zone of four kilometers around the crater has been in place since December 2024. The hikers reportedly ignored warnings and social media alerts advising against entering the area.

## Assistance for Affected Families

Singapore's foreign ministry is coordinating with its embassy in Jakarta to support the families of the victims. Indonesia, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," frequently experiences volcanic eruptions and earthquakes due to its tectonic setting, with nearly 130 active volcanoes across the archipelago.
