## Survey Highlights Gaps in Child Car Seat Usage
A recent survey conducted by RoadSafetyUAE and Al Wathba Insurance reveals that nearly 30% of parents in the UAE still travel without using child car seats, despite a law mandating their use since 2017. The study, which surveyed 1,010 residents in January 2026, shows that while 72% of parents with children aged zero to four own a child restraint system, a significant portion either do not own or do not consistently use them.
## Reasons for Non-Compliance
Among parents who do not own a child car seat, 29% cited their child's dislike for being strapped in as a reason. Others believe holding the child is sufficient or have confidence in their driving skills to avoid accidents. Some parents also mentioned the cost of seats as a barrier. Even among those who own a seat, consistent use is not guaranteed, with 18% using them most of the time and 3% never using them.
## Inconsistent Use in Non-Family Vehicles
The survey also found that only 52% of parents ensure their child uses a car seat when traveling in taxis or other non-family vehicles. This inconsistency highlights a gap in safety practices outside the family car.
## Progress and Recommendations
Since the law's implementation, ownership of child seats has increased from 64% in 2017 to 72% in 2026. However, experts like Thomas Edelmann of RoadSafetyUAE stress the need for educational campaigns starting at the pre-natal stage and continuing through school years. He suggests policies requiring proof of car seat ownership before newborns are discharged from hospitals.
Muralikrishnan Raman from Al Wathba Insurance emphasizes the importance of instilling safe habits early, noting that proper restraint systems are crucial for preventing injuries in accidents.
