## Introduction of the EES
Travelers from the UAE heading to Europe will now experience the European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES), which became fully operational on April 10, 2026. This digital platform replaces traditional passport stamping with biometric registration to enhance border security and track overstays.
## Impact on Travelers
The EES applies to non-EU citizens entering Schengen countries for short stays. UAE passport holders traveling visa-free or those requiring a Schengen visa will undergo biometric checks. However, EU citizens and residents with EU-issued permits are exempt.
## Biometric Checks and Delays
At the first Schengen entry point, travelers may be directed to self-service kiosks, eGates, or staffed counters for passport scanning, fingerprinting, and facial imaging. Despite temporary measures to ease congestion, travelers should anticipate longer processing times, especially at busy airports like Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Frankfurt.
## Preparing for Travel
Travelers are advised to ensure their passports have at least six months validity and two blank pages. Arriving earlier at airports and allowing extra time for connections is recommended. Keeping boarding passes and travel documents accessible can help mitigate any issues arising from manual fallback systems.
## Monitoring Stay Duration
The EES automatically tracks the Schengen 90/180-day rule, allowing UAE nationals to stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Overstays can result in fines or entry bans, so travelers should monitor their days spent in Europe carefully.
## Future Changes
The EES is part of a broader EU border digitization initiative. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in late 2026, requiring visa-exempt travelers to apply online before travel.
