## Rising Hantavirus Cases in Argentina
Argentina is experiencing a significant increase in hantavirus infections, with cases doubling since June 2025. This surge is attributed to climate change, which has altered ecosystems, allowing rodents that carry the virus to thrive in new areas. The Argentine Health Ministry reported 101 cases, a sharp rise from the previous year.
## Impact of Climate Change
Experts suggest that warming temperatures and changing weather patterns have expanded the virus's range. These conditions have led to increased rodent populations, which are the primary carriers of hantavirus. The virus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva.
## Cruise Ship Outbreak
The MV Hondius cruise ship, which departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, has reported cases of the Andes virus, a strain of hantavirus. Three passengers have died, and investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the infection. Authorities are tracing the passengers' movements in Argentina to identify potential exposure sites.
## Regional Spread
The hantavirus, once confined to southern Patagonia, is now prevalent in northern Argentina. The province of Buenos Aires has also reported outbreaks. This shift is linked to climate-driven changes in rodent habitats and food availability, which have facilitated the virus's spread.
## Ongoing Investigations
Health officials are working to trace the virus's path and prevent further transmission. The World Health Organization is involved in the investigation, as the virus's incubation period complicates pinpointing the exact time and location of infection. The situation highlights the broader impact of climate change on public health.
