UAE’s first world-scale methanol plant secures $2 billion financing

## Major Financing for Methanol Plant

The UAE's inaugural large-scale methanol plant, located in Abu Dhabi's Ruwais Industrial City, has secured $2 billion in financing. This development marks a significant step forward for the TA’ZIZ Methanol Company, a joint venture between TA’ZIZ and Proman, as it moves towards its planned 2028 operational start.

## Strong Global Interest

The financing package, which was significantly oversubscribed, includes a $1.8 billion conventional syndicated loan and a $200 million Islamic facility. Eleven financial institutions from regions including Europe and Asia participated, highlighting strong international interest in Abu Dhabi's industrial growth.

## Key Players and Structure

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation served as the exclusive financial adviser, while Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank and First Abu Dhabi Bank acted as bookrunners and lead arrangers. These institutions played a crucial role in structuring the loan and coordinating the syndicate.

## Strategic Industrial Expansion

The methanol plant is part of a broader strategy to enhance the UAE's domestic chemicals production and reduce import dependency. Once operational, it will contribute to the local manufacturing sector and support the development of a chemicals value chain within the country.

## Future Prospects

Construction of the plant is already underway, with completion targeted for 2028. The project is expected to bolster Abu Dhabi's downstream industrial production, leveraging its energy and chemicals resources to capture more value locally.
