## Broadcast Rights Unresolved
As the FIFA 2026 World Cup approaches, fans in India and China face uncertainty over where they can watch the tournament. Despite the event being broadcast in 175 countries, these two major markets have yet to secure broadcasting rights.
## Negotiations Stalled in India
In India, negotiations have hit a standstill due to disagreements over the valuation of the broadcast rights. A joint venture between Reliance and Disney, known as JioStar, reportedly offered $20 million, which FIFA rejected. FIFA initially sought $100 million for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups combined. Concerns about low viewership due to late-night match timings and existing advertising commitments to cricket further complicate the situation.
## China's Unusual Silence
In China, the usual broadcaster, CCTV, has not secured rights, which is unusual given their past early acquisitions and promotions. Discussions are ongoing but remain confidential. The lack of an agreement is significant, considering China's large audience, which contributed significantly to global digital viewing in the last World Cup.
## Global Context
While FIFA has finalized deals in over 175 territories, the absence of agreements in India and China is notable. Both countries have large populations with passionate football fans, even though neither has qualified for the tournament. The expanded 48-team World Cup is set to be hosted in North America, with kickoff just weeks away.
