UAE’s Dh1 billion Fujairah desalination plant: What it means for water supply

## Major Investment in Water Infrastructure

The UAE has announced a significant investment in water infrastructure with the construction of a new desalination plant at the Port of Fujairah. The project, valued at Dh1 billion, aims to bolster the country's water supply by converting seawater into potable water.

## Project Details

The Fujairah I Independent Water Producer plant will be developed under a partnership between NMDC Infra and Lantania Aguas. The facility will utilize seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology, which is more energy-efficient than traditional thermal methods. Once operational, the plant will have a capacity of 60 million imperial gallons per day, with storage for 18 hours of production.

## Importance of the Project

As the UAE faces increasing water demand due to urban growth and industrial expansion, this project is crucial for ensuring a stable water supply. The plant's ability to store nearly a day's worth of production will help manage demand fluctuations and potential disruptions.

## Timeline and Future Operations

Construction is expected to take about 30 months, after which the plant will gradually reach full capacity. The desalinated water will serve residential, commercial, and industrial users in Fujairah and beyond, contributing to the UAE's long-term water security.
