## Temporary Suspension of Biometric Checks
Schengen area authorities have the option to temporarily suspend biometric checks under the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) during times of severe congestion at airports. This flexibility is part of a strategy to prevent long queues and operational disruptions, especially at major European airports.
## EES Implementation
The EES, operational since April 10, 2026, replaces manual passport stamping with a digital system that uses biometric data to record entries and exits of non-EU nationals. This system aims to track overstays and enhance border security.
## Impact on UAE Travellers
For UAE nationals, who enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, the changes primarily affect the processing of border checks. Residents requiring visas must still follow the standard application process. The EES does not change stay limits but digitizes compliance monitoring.
## Industry Concerns
Airports and airlines have expressed concerns about potential longer queues as the biometric system is fully implemented. Authorities emphasize that any easing of checks is temporary and situational, with the EES database continuing to record traveler movements even if some biometric steps are deferred.
## Future Developments
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in late 2026, requiring visa-exempt travelers, including UAE nationals, to obtain pre-travel authorization before entering Schengen countries. This will add another digital layer to border controls.
