Abu Dhabi school food rules 2026: What’s on the banned list?

## New Nutritional Guidelines

Abu Dhabi has introduced new regulations for school food, effective 2026, aimed at promoting healthier eating habits among students. The initiative, led by the Department of Education and Knowledge alongside the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, seeks to eliminate foods high in sugar, salt, and artificial additives from school environments.

## Banned Items

The guidelines prohibit several categories of food and drinks. High-sugar beverages, including soft drinks and energy drinks, are banned, as are caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea. Sweets such as candies, ice creams, and processed desserts are also restricted, with dark chocolate being the only exception if it contains at least 50% cocoa.

High-sodium foods, including fried items like chicken nuggets and salty snacks, are not allowed. Processed meats and foods with chemical additives, such as MSG and synthetic colors, are also on the banned list.

## Additional Restrictions

Other prohibited items include pork products, foods containing alcohol, hydrogenated fats, and certain allergens like nuts. Foods that pose choking hazards or contain high fructose corn syrup are discouraged due to health concerns.

## Healthier Alternatives

Schools are encouraged to offer healthier options, such as baked or grilled proteins, whole grains, and fresh fruits. Drinks should focus on hydration, with water and unsweetened fruit juices being preferred. Homemade sauces and low-salt condiments are recommended.

## Enforcement Measures

Schools must integrate these rules into their policies and ensure compliance through regular checks. Parents and staff are to be informed about the restrictions, and canteen operators are required to verify ingredients and preparation methods.
